Can’t Sit Still?
Turn your fidgety, Type-A personality into a money-making machine with these low-key, but fun ways to bring in extra cash.
Pet Sitting or Pet Walking
If you’re a lover of animals and live in a neighborhood filled with them, then this could be your gig. Decide between Day Care, Walking or Overnights with your furry clients. The average Pet Day Care fees are $15-35 per day, per pet, which is less expensive than a traditional Pet hotel, and is a more friendly environment. If you prefer to stick with Pet Walking, you can bring in anywhere from $15-20 for a 20-30 minute walk. Larger dogs will require longer walks, so you will be able to charge $22-27 for a 40-minute walk per dog. Overnight pet sitting is somewhat arbitrary, depending on the going rate in your area. You will be able to charge anywhere from $25-80/ per night. Be sure not to mix species unless they come from the same family and are accustomed to hanging out together. To get started: Develop a flyer that lists your services, prices and add-ons. Pin up the flyers in your local coffee shops and retail stores, as well as hanging them on the handles of the front doors of everyone in your neighborhood. If you don’t know how to do that, use an online website such as CheapDoorHangers.com, to print and find a local doorhanging company to distribute them. For example: DMSadvertising.net operates in 500 cities and towns and has distributed over 50 million promotional pieces.
Computer Training
If you’re good at teaching and have some basic to intermediate computer skills, put out your shingle to help others who can’t seem to get the hang of it! Most boomers will pay anywhere from $20-35/hr, depending on where you live. Craig’s list or your local newspaper are the perfect places to advertise your services. You could also get a class together and make more money per hour. Make sure you know the basics of Windows 7, Windows 10, Microsoft Word, DropBox, creating a CD or DVD and – of course – search engines and how to use the internet!
Fitness Training
Fitness has become more and more important to Baby Boomers around the country. Overweight and out-of-shape is counterproductive to our health. Yet many are resistant to weight loss and exercise programs. Consider creating fun workouts that strengthen bones, muscles and improve flexibility – three of the most common causes of declining health as we age. Develop an online class for YouTube or a localized program. If you are in a senior development, you practically have automatic customers. Put up flyers or advertise in your local newspaper or Craig’s List.
Boomer Dating Parties
With over half of us divorced or widowed, Boomer’s get lonely once they retire. If you’re great at event planning, then this is a business you can start small. It is ideal if your condo association or development has a party room that can be rented. Or find a local restaurant that has a room that can be devoted to a gathering. You could even use your local park as a destination for a daytime event. Baby Boomers like to mingle, so create an event where the entry fee only costs $10-30, depending on location, refreshments, etc. Theming your events can draw a great variety of people. Here are a few ideas: White and Black Party, Mask Party, Game Night, Craft Party and Bring Your Pet Party! Once again, flyers and Craig’s List are excellent places to advertise. Meetup.com and Facebook.com are also perfect venues to start a Boomer Single’s Group.
