Where Do You Want to Be in 5 Years?

You probably think that is a sophomoric question, meant for those who are still in the planning stages of their lives. From our perspective, that thinking contributes to SeniorFreeze – defined as boomers who haven’t a clue about how to make their golden years, golden. If you are in your 50s, 60s and 70s, there is no time like the present to plan your future.

Start with Your Bucket List

Have you glossed over the items on your bucket list feeling like you waited too long? That feeling will pass when you realize that enthusiasm for change, adventure and new beginnings is still a part of you. Did you know that George H. W. Bush celebrated several major birthdays with a skydive? In fact, he loved it so much he took his last jump four years ago when he was 90-years-old. It doesn’t take courage as much as it takes a little planning and commitment to follow through on what you always said you wanted to do.  Or are you just all talk and no walk? So many Boomers justify stagnation by claiming “old age”.

Time to Write a New Bucket List

It doesn’t need to take too long. You may want to start by writing down the top 10 things you always wanted to do but for reasons of time, budget or friends to do it with, they never happened. Here are a few ideas:

  • Art class: painting, sculpting, mosaics, pottery, jewelry-making, stained glass
  • Culinary classes: how to use herbs, a new ethnic cuisine, homemade pizza, healthy
  • Gardening: community gardens, herb garden, patio garden, window box garden
  • Adventures: overseas, regional, vacations, and staycations

Then, keep your notepad or mobile pad handy because as you go about your week it is likely that new ideas will come forth. Keep an open mind and eyes wide open. What could be different? More fun and engaging? What will make you feel alive and energetic again?
